Support Technical.ly’s mission with a tax-deductible donation

My entire professional career has focused on a pair of the biggest challenges of American life: professionally-verified local information and economic mobility.

Those themes also shape Technical.ly, a news organization with a community of technologists and entrepreneurs who are invested in where they live. In 2024, we celebrate 15 years of independent community journalism. That’s a pretty long time in today’s era of local news.

Our audience comes in two waves: experienced technologists and entrepreneurs, and those aspiring to join these career paths. Those experienced professionals rely on us to stay tethered locally, and their aspiring peers rely on Technical.ly to wayfind through programs and resources.

We sustain our free journalism — not behind a paywall! — with services to reach our audience (find those services here), a preferred partners program (check it out here) and direct contributions to our independent newsroom.

Now our years-old Technical.ly Journalism Fund has gotten easier to support: Your contribution is tax deductible through our fiscal agency with the nonprofit behind Report for America.

In February, we set a $1M Journalism Fund goal over this year and next to bolster our data journalism, cross-market comparisons and deeper trends and investigations — all without a paywall.

Over the last 90 days, we’ve secured more than $200,000, via a mix of foundations, economic development orgs and individuals (whom we dubbed Insiders and gave special access at our annual Builders Conference). We’ve invested in proprietary data, software tools and newsroom leadership

Our progress and goals

Thanks to early investments from Report for America, the Lenfest Institute, Longwood Foundation, Heinz Endowments and the William Penn Foundation, we’re nearly halfway to our goal for 2024. But we still need your help to reach it by year’s end.

If you care about making entrepreneurship and tech careers more accessible, if Technical.ly has helped you on your career journey, or just want to support Technical.ly without relying on our services, then consider this tax-advantaged way to make an annual contribution.

Economic pathways are deeply local. We intend for Technical.ly to become a national voice on workforce and entrepreneurship pathways, while always investing in local storytelling.

We need your help to get there.

As we commemorate our 15th anniversary, we are also looking to the future. Our newsroom is working on stories that explore the evolution of technology in our markets since 2009, examining which promises have been fulfilled and what innovation engines continue to drive local economies. We’re also planning a special editorial calendar in December focused on imagining the next 150 years of local tech economies, culminating in our second annual State of the Local Tech Economy reports.

We are proud of our accomplishments and excited about the future. With your support, we can ensure Technical.ly continues to thrive for the next 15 years and beyond.

Before you go…

Please consider supporting Technical.ly to keep our independent journalism strong. Unlike most business-focused media outlets, we don’t have a paywall. Instead, we count on your personal and organizational support.

3 ways to support our work:

  • Contribute to the Journalism Fund. Charitable giving ensures our information remains free and accessible for residents to discover workforce programs and entrepreneurship pathways. This includes philanthropic grants and individual tax-deductible donations from readers like you.
  • Use our Preferred Partners. Our directory of vetted providers offers high-quality recommendations for services our readers need, and each referral supports our journalism.
  • Use our services. If you need entrepreneurs and tech leaders to buy your services, are seeking technologists to hire or want more professionals to know about your ecosystem, Technical.ly has the biggest and most engaged audience in the mid-Atlantic. We help companies tell their stories and answer big questions to meet and serve our community.
