SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – The last time Mike Trout played for the Salt Lake Bees, he was considered a top prospect in the Los Angeles Angels organization.
Twelve years later, Trout is considered one of the best players of all-time.
Trout, who won Rookie of the Year honors in 2012, and was the American League Most Valuable Player in 2014, 2016 and 2019, begins a rehab assignment with the Bees Tuesday night against El Paso. Trout says has nothing but fond memories of his time here.
“It brings back a lot of good memories,:” Trout said. “Obviously, this isn’t where I wanted to be, but I’m living it up. I’m here now, so I got to get the work in and enjoy it. It’s gonna be fun to see some fans and play with the guys.”
Trout was off to one of the best starts of his brilliant Major League career in 2024. He hit 10 home runs in his first 29 games before suffering a knee injury that required surgery on May 3rd. Trout isn’t sure how long he’ll be with the Bees before going back up to the Angels.
“I don’t know the exact amount of days,” Trout said. “I have to get through the whole being out on the field and recovering the next day sort of thing. So, we’ll see how it goes tonight and see how I feel tomorrow.”
For his career, Trout has hit 378 home runs and has 974 RBI with a .299 batting average.
While he is with the Bees, Trout knows a lot of the players will be asking him questions regarding his rise to stardom, and he is happy to be a mentor for the next few games.
“Being one of older guys in the clubhouse, I’m always approachable,” Trout said. “I talk to everybody, so I’m looking forward to talking to the guys and have some fun.”
Even though it hasn’t played with the Bees since 2012, Bees fans have been wearing Mike Trout jerseys ever since, and he wants to put on a good show for them this week.
“It makes me feel good, and I just want to go out there play the game the right way,” Trout said. “Growing up, I had a lot of role models just the way they carried themselves on the field. I just try to emulate that, and because I know a lot of people are wearing my jerseys and looking up to me, I want to go out there play hard every night.”
