Backyard fire damages 3 houses in West Valley, one home uninhabitable

WEST VALLEY CITY (ABC4) — Three homes are damaged after a fire spread from a backyard in West Valley City to the yards of neighboring homes early Thursday morning, according to the West Valley City Fire Department.

Authorities responded to a fire near 5000 West Elaine Drive around 2:40 a.m. on Thursday. The fire had sparked in the backyard of a home and winds quickly spread the flames to the yards of two others. The fire caused a varying degree of damage to each structure.

West Valley fire officials say the house where the fire originated has the most damage and is no longer habitable. A second residence was damaged on its exterior and the third has smoke damage.

Officials said the Red Cross is assisting those displaced due to the fire, however, they did not disclose how many people are affected.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and while there is no “obvious cause,” authorities said they are looking into the possibility that it was sparked by fireworks.

There is no further information at this time.
