EIGHT-DIVISION world champion Manny Pacquiao got a reversal of a last year’s 9-3 jury decision when the superior court of California found out that Paradigm Sports Management (PSM) doesn’t properly license as a boxing manager in California.
In a decision penned by Judge Walter Schwarm last July 1, the California Superior Court favored Pacquiao’s camp motion of dismissing the case after noting that PSM headed by President Audie Attar was not properly licensed as a manager under the state of California’s existing laws.
“Although the judgment is not presently final, we are pleased that the Court made its tentative decision on the legal issues in Mr. Pacquiao’s favor,” Pacquiao’s lawyer Jason Aniel said through a statement relayed by MP Promotions President Sean Gibbons.
“The Court decided the contract that Paradigm Sports Management sought to enforce against Mr. Pacquiao was illegal as Paradigm was not properly licensed.”
Last year, a US jury told Pacquiao to pay $5.1 million to Paradigm for a breach of contract and for allegedly not implying a fair dealing.
But the camp of Pacquiao got another way to overturn the decision after filing another motion that the Paradigm was not licensed to operate as manager in California in 2019, 2020 and 2021, which was tentatively favored by judge Schwarm.
PSM lawyer Judd Burstein said they would appeal the ruling, saying: “I have a great respect for this judge, but I disagree with him in this decision.”
The two parties met on February 8, 2020, until October of the same year, as they were planning to arrange a fight with UFC star Conor McGregor, but it did not happen.
PSM tried to set up Mickey Garcia to fight Pacquiao, but the former senator surprisingly chose supposed to be opponent unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr., who got an eye injury a few weeks before their August 21, 2021, bout in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao lost to substitute opponent Cuban Yordenis Ugas via unanimous decision that turned out to be his last professional fight.
