Community Spotlight: Back to the Prairibbean at Riggs

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Eastern Illinois Parrot Head Club and the Developmental Services Center (DSC) are teaming up to host “Back to the Prairibbean” — a benefit concert — at Riggs Beer Company in Urbana.

Connie Walsh of the Eastern Illinois Parrot Head Club and Jodie Harmon, DSC Vice President of Development and Communications, spoke about the event for a Tuesday Community Spotlight.

Walsh said the Parrot Head Club centers around a love for Jimmy Buffett music, fun in the sun, and a mission to “party with a purpose.” The club has hosted service projects and annual events since 2005, raising more than $612,000 in net proceeds for local nonprofits.

The DSC is one of those nonprofits. It supports children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Harmon said. The Parrot Head Club and DSC first partnered up in 2010 and have since raised a total of $503,000 together for the center.

“Back to the Prairibbean” will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 5 – 8 p.m. The live concert will feature The Boat Drunks, who will take the stage starting at 5:30 p.m. There will also be a raffle and food from La Paloma and Watson’s Chicken.

For tickets and more information, visit www.eiphc.org or www.dsc-illinois.org. All the event proceeds will go to DSC.
