VERNAL, Utah (ABC4) — While Vernal officers were actively enforcing crosswalk laws on Main Street for Pioneer Day, a female pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in another part of the city.
Vernal Police Department said Thursday that a pedestrian was struck and injured Wednesday, July 24, while crossing the street using a crosswalk. She was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The victim’s identity was not released.
The driver allegedly told police they had not seen the pedestrian, and officers issued a citation.
On Vernal’s Main Street, officers were conducting traffic stops on drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians using a crosswalk. During the traffic stops, some drivers were discovered to have outstanding warrants or an invalid driver’s license and were arrested. Police did not disclose how many people were arrested in connection to the Pioneer Day traffic stops.
The Utah holiday has passed, however Vernal police say they will continue to look for violations and issue citations in order to prevent future collisions.
“The Vernal City Police Department encourages drivers to be mindful of pedestrians not only on Main Street but at all intersections and crosswalks,” the department said. “We want our community members, children, and visitors to be safe and enjoy what Vernal has to offer as they walk around town.”
Police referred drivers to Utah Code 41-6a-1002 called “Pedestrians’ right of way — Duty of pedestrian.” State law says drivers must yield to pedestrians on a crosswalk and any pedestrian crossing the road who could be endangered by their vehicle.
If the crosswalk is in a school zone, the driver must completely stop if someone is using the crosswalk. Violations may result in fines and a required court appearance.
