Springfield shooting suspect arrested, charged with murder



SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A Springfield man is under arrest and charged with murder in connection to a deadly shooting that took place on Thursday.

Springfield Police found a 47-year-old man at Miller and 5th Streets while responding to a report of shots being fired. Shot multiple times, the victim died 30 minutes later at HSHS St. John’s Hospital.

Springfield Police officials said investigating detectives quickly identified a suspect and 90 minutes after the shooting, they found him in the area of MacArthur Boulevard and Highland Avenue. The suspect was named as Shelton Woolridge, 27 of Springfield, and officials said the murder weapon was recovered.

After being booked into the Sangamon County Jail on Thursday, officials said the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Woolridge the following day. He faces three counts of first-degree murder and one of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Woolridge’s first court appearance will be Friday at 2 p.m. The State’s Attorney’s Office has filed a petition to deny him pretrial release.
