Hearts melted on social media after viewers watched a senior dog pass the test on whether her nose still worked as well as it used to.
As Kaya the basset hound entered her golden years, her owners started noticing her nose wasn’t working as well as it had in the past. Basset hounds are known for their great smelling and tracking abilities. The American Kennel Club says basset hounds are just behind bloodhounds as the dog breed with the best sense of smell.
It’s not just their nose that does the work. A basset hound’s long, droopy ears help pull up smells to their noses and trap them there. These dogs have nearly 220 million scent receptors in their noses, allowing them to track a scent for miles without being distracted.
But with Kaya being 13 years old, the owners thought her sense of smell hadn’t been as strong as would be expected with this breed. To test the theory, they decided to hide a piece of bacon they brought home from the diner.
In the November 19 video posted to the account @the.royal.basset, the owner put Kaya in the bathroom while he went to hide the bacon. He rubbed the bacon on different objects throughout the house to potentially throw her off before putting it in a shoe in the closet.
Kaya was on a mission as soon as she was let out of the bathroom. Her head was glued to the ground as she sniffed through the house. Her tail wagged the entire time while she walked from room to room.
Part of the caption reads: “She went to work just like old times! It’s like she’s a puppy again.”
Newsweek reached out to @the.royal.basset via TikTok for more information.
Kaya looked for the bacon in the areas where the owner had rubbed it. She fell for the tricks but not for long. One sniff and she knew she needed to move on.
When she finally felt she was on the right trail, she picked up speed and darted toward the bedroom closet. She gobbled up the bacon in one bite as soon as she identified the right shoe.
Like Kaya’s owners, viewers were blown away by her ability to sniff the bacon despite her age. The TikTok clip has amassed over 381,900 views and 64,700 likes.
People were invested in the dog’s success. One user wrote: “Not me screaming, ‘You’re getting warmer!!!'”
Another said: “Her sniffer is still amazing! She could smell where you swiped around. Good upper!”
Another added: “I love that you’re still working her as a senior. They feel the accomplishment at every age.”
