ILLINOIS (WCIA) — A new report shows a concerning rise of domestic violence instances in Illinois.
The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence presented their data from 2023. It shows both domestic violence instances and deaths have doubled statewide since 2022.
2022 had 45 instances and 57 deaths. 2023, on the other hand, reported 94 instances of violence and 120 resulting in deaths. Many of those were murder-suicides.
Vickie Smith, a spokesperson from the coalition, said the 121% increase is very worrisome.
“Over the years, there’s sort of these ups and downs. We’re always glad when we see them go down, but we’ve never seen this dramatic of an increase and we’ve never seen this high a number. So, both of those are telling us we have a lot of work to do.”
The coalition reminds everyone that the Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7. Call 1-800-799-7233.
