San Diego Padres right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease has thrown the second no-hitter of the 2024 Major League Baseball season — and the second in Padres’ franchise history.
Cease dominated the Washington Nationals on Thursday afternoon, allowing no hits and no runs while walking just three across nine innings of work. He threw 114 pitches.
Cease joins Houston Astros right-handed pitcher Ronel Blanco as the two hurlers with no-hitters this season. Blanco’s came in his eighth career start at the MLB level.
For Cease, it’s his first career no-hitter in his 145th career start at the MLB level. He came very close to throwing one in 2022 when he was with the Chicago White Sox. However, a ninth inning single by Luis Arraez (now his teammate on the Padres) ended the bid.
This time, nothing came in the way of Cease’s historic start.
Cease, 28, was acquired by the Padres just before they left for Korea for their opening series against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Seoul. Cease was expected to work as the team’s No. 3 starter behind right-handed pitchers Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove, but he’s quickly turned into the ace of the Padres this season.
Cease joins Musgrove as the only pitchers with no-hitters in Padres’ franchise history.
